Surge Protection explained…
Surge Protection is an internal system that limits the amount of unsafe voltage from damaging your electrical and building infrastructure. A Surge Protection Device (SPD) diverts dangerous and unwanted voltage from the electrical system to a safe ground.
As of January 1st 2019, surge protection has now become a requirement to comply with 18th Edition BS7671. The SPD protects electrical equipment from power surges that may occur from unpredictable occurrences such as lightning, power outages and/or short circuits. Over-voltages may even occur from internal equipment within your electrical infrastructure, e.g. machinery and motors.
Devices listed below are at a higher risk of damage due to their make-up of sensitive electronic equipment. Therefore it is highly important to protect your equipment by installing the required correct device as per the electrical regulations.
The types of electrical equipment that can be affected:
- Refrigeration condensing units
- Process control
- Vehicle charging points
- HVAC systems
- Solar panels
- CCTV systems
- Alarm system
- Telecommunications networks
- Water chillers
- Lighting systems
- Smoke and heat extraction systems
- Emergency lighting systems
- Building management systems
- Computers and servers
- Your entire electrical system
What are the Benefits of Surge Protection?
- Reduced replacement or repair costs
- Insurance compliance
- Compliant to BS:7671
- Reduced risk of damage and fire
- Equipment protection
- Less downtime
